This exhibit at the Ontario Science Centre teaches children the mathematics behind building a house and lets the children get creative and "Be a builder"!

The Ontario Science Centre website, explores many scientific concepts and the science behind their exhibits however, by taking a closer look at their website and resources mathematical concepts, such as measurement can also be explored. Looking at the teacher resources and field trip materials section of the website there is an extensive list on exhibits that connects to every aspect of the curriculum from grades JK-12. Looking specifically at the grade one inquires, it suggests the “Be a Builder” exhibit for the students to explore a range of mathematical concepts. In this exhibit, students are able to “build” their own house using multi-materials table and a large framed structure. The students have the opportunity to add bricks to the house and use many shapes and materials to build the house.

Supporting Children's Learning of Measurement Through "Be a Builder" Exhibit

This exhibit can support children learning about non-standard measurement as they are able to build their own house and uses measurement to see how many bricks can be placed across. Educators can help support their learning by getting the children to measure individual bricks using non-standard units or standards units, they can then measure the space where they want to put the brick to see if it will fit. The children can also measure, which part of the house is the widest, by counting the bricks (non-standard measurement) and estimate which part of the house is the highest. This experience allows the children to think of non-standard and standard measurement in their daily lives as they are surrounded by the construction of buildings and homes and will allow them to connect this experience provided by the Science Centre to what is happening in the world and even in their communities.
